• Suzuki has introduced the updated Hustler in Japan.
  • The Tough Wild trim gets Suzuki lettering on the grille.
  • All grades gain upgraded standard safety technology.

Japan’s kei segment moves on its own clock, and Suzuki has finally gotten around to updating one of its quirkier residents. The Hustler is getting a mid-lifecycle refresh, six and a half years after the second-generation model arrived. The rugged little box now gets a new face, fresh colors, an expanded standard safety package, and a few chassis adjustments.

Visually, the highlight is the larger grille and redesigned bumper intakes. The adventurous Tough Wild trim keeps its unpainted plastic bumper with metal-style accents, but adopts a different grille with Suzuki lettering that echoes the Jimny. The rest of the design carries over, with the exception of a tweaked rear emblem.

The paint chart grows by two. Fusion Yellow Pearl Metallic pairs with a Gunmetal roof, and Woodland Khaki Metallic comes with an Urban Brown roof. Both lean into the Hustler’s pseudo-adventure character, which has always been the whole point of the tall kei model.

Changes are limited inside the cabin, with new colors and a standard electronic parking brake. More importantly, the kei car benefits from the updated Dual Sensor Brake Support II system, along with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert fitted as standard across the lineup.

On the chassis side, Suzuki engineers have retuned the steering and the active cornering support system for a slightly more polished driving feel.

Under the hood, the model carries over its mild-hybrid 660cc three-cylinder powertrains. The naturally aspirated version produces 48 hp (36 kW / 49 PS), while the turbocharged unit is good for 63 hp (47 kW / 64 PS). As before, power heads to either the front or all four wheels through a mandatory CVT.
