• Honda plans a major redesign for the 3-year-old Accord sedan.
  • Interior could gain a larger screen and a more ergonomic cockpit.
  • Hybrid variant might receive the S+ Shift system from the Prelude.

Honda is celebrating the 50 years of the Accord, and rather than coast on the nameplate’s legacy, the automaker is reportedly cooking up a mid-lifecycle overhaul substantial enough to feel like an all-new generation.

The eleventh-generation sedan arrived in November 2022, which puts it right on schedule for a routine facelift later this year. A mildly updated version of the current Accord with a reworked grille and bumper already broke cover in China last year, yet the US-spec car has stayed largely the same.

Citing insider sources, Auto News reports the Accord will take on a “modern and futuristic” stance and abandon the safe styling of today’s car. One unnamed source says the sedan will wear a new face with a narrower grille and slimmer headlights, paired with a sharper, more angular tail and fresh lights.

If the rumors hold, the updated Accord could borrow heavily from the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype shown last month, the one wearing that low, aerodynamic fastback roofline. Don’t expect a wholesale copy, though. The production car will almost certainly carry over some hardware rather than adopt the concept’s clean-sheet bodywork. That same prototype is reportedly informing the next Civic as well.

Another source admitted that the now-cancelled Honda 0 Series Saloon “went too far” in terms of styling, but said the new Accord will “strike the right balance.” Inside, it’s expected to gain a larger infotainment display as part of an “ergonomic cockpit.”

Gary Robinson, head of product planning at American Honda, said: “Customers will see a substantially redesigned Accord that will feel like a new model,”. Robinson confirmed that the upcoming changes will be “pretty major”, aligning with the rumors.

The high-ranking official added that today’s sedan buyers are loyal to the bodystyle and “tend to be more oriented toward sporty sedans.” He also pointed out that sedans do “incredibly well” on affordability and fuel economy, two things weighing more heavily on buyers’ minds these days.

Beyond the styling refresh, the Accord is expected to pick up the S+ Shift system already found on the Prelude and the Japanese-market Civic. The feature pipes simulated manual gear changes into the e:HEV hybrid powertrain, giving the driver something to do and making the car more engaging in the process.

The plain gasoline Accord isn’t going anywhere just yet, though. That non-electrified powertrain reportedly survives through early 2030, after which the Accord is expected to go hybrid-only as part of a larger redesign.

Main rivals of the Honda Accord in the US market include the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, and Nissan Altima. However, there are rumors about new sedans from Buick and Ford, potentially bringing tougher competition over the next few years.

As reported by Automotive News, the Accord, the Civic, and the Prelude accounted for nearly a third of Honda sales in the US during the first quarter of 2026. That helped Honda increase its share in the sedan market to 15.9%. The Accord occupies a market share of 21.5% in its segment with 37,317 sales in Q1 2026 positioning it in the second place behind the Toyota Camry.
