Police have arrested the driver and passenger of a silver Kia Soul that led authorities on a high-speed chase in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the Michigan State Police were asked to assist a border protection aviation unit in pursuit of a carjacking suspect at roughly 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. When the aviation unit lead ground units to the suspect’s location, a high-speed chase ensued.

Writing on Twitter, the Michigan State Police say they tried to stop the suspect on Metro Parkway but were unable to do so and the chase continued through several cities.

A FOX 2 Detroit helicopter filmed much of the chase and shows the Kia speeding through several suburban streets and swerving out of the way of various police vehicles, even running across front lawns to do so. However, the driver’s high-speed joy ride came to a frightening end after they lost control and crash.

Helicopter vision of the crash shows the Soul clipping a patch of dirt while driving around banked-up traffic at a light. The Kia then slides off the road and smashes into a tree, destroying its rear-end and leaving wreckage strewn across the road. It takes just a matter of seconds before police catch up to the suspects and pull them from the vehicle.

Police say the two suspects suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. A report will be submitted to prosecutors for fleeing and eluding police.
