• A shop worker was filmed speeding in a customer’s Odyssey.
  • Police clocked the Honda speeding through a construction zone.
  • Video evidence helped authorities pursue the speeding case.

Of all the vehicles someone could choose to hoon around in, a Honda Odyssey minivan probably sits somewhere near the bottom of that list. That didn’t stop one body shop employee from treating a customer’s family hauler like it was a sports car, pushing it to 140 km/h (about 90 mph) in a construction zone before getting caught by police.

Naturally, the entire episode, which appears to have unfolded somewhere in Canada, was captured on the vehicle’s dashcam. The story only gets better from here.

The Odyssey’s owner shared the footage on Reddit after the van was temporarily impounded following the incident. According to the post, the minivan had been at a body shop for repairs after being rear-ended. While it was there, the shop discovered a minor mechanical issue and arranged to have it checked by a mechanic.

The Freeway Joyride

On the drive back, the employee behind the wheel decided to see what the Odyssey’s V6 could do. Instead of sticking to the posted 80 km/h (50 mph) construction-zone limit, the driver blasted down the freeway at roughly 140 km/h.

The dashcam video reportedly shows the employee reveling in the moment, seemingly enjoying his brief stint telling someone on the phone that he’s “the alpha” behind the wheel of a very un-alpha vehicle. That was roughly the moment when the police showed up.

Almost instantly, the tone changes. The swagger disappears, and the confident joyride turns into a sheepish traffic stop as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer pulls the minivan over. The reason things escalated so quickly is simple: 140 km/h in an 80 km/h zone qualifies as excessive speeding in many jurisdictions. In this case, authorities immediately impounded the customer’s vehicle for seven days. And the consequences didn’t stop there.

Novice Driver Consequences

According to the Odyssey’s owner, the driver was a novice license holder, meaning the violation could have even more serious implications for his driving privileges. Regardless of what happens with his license, the employee has already lost his job after the body shop owner learned what happened. Of course, it’s also worth pointing out just how vital having the dashcam was in this situation.

Police asked for the footage, no doubt to help prosecute the driver. Without it, things could’ve gone differently here. To the shop’s credit, the business appears to have handled the aftermath extremely well.

The owner says the shop covered all the impound-related costs, had the minivan professionally detailed, and even offered to take the family out for dinner to make up for the ordeal. Not a bad recovery effort, although it all traces back to one brief moment of “alpha” energy from a man behaving like a child behind the wheel of a minivan that was very much not his.
