Honda has been talking about turning Honda Racing Corporation’s (HRC) Civic Type R upgrades into something you can actually buy, and now there is video to back it up. The latest clip puts an HRC-prepped Type R on Suzuka, giving the hardware its first proper outing on track .

The footage is the first look at the motorsport-derived parts being used in anger. HRC President Koji Watanabe recently confirmed the kit will go on sale as accessories in both Japan and the US, rather than being bundled into a limited-edition car. That means owners of existing Type Rs get a shot at this hardware too.
Sato Has Thoughts
The Suzuka program follows earlier rounds of simulator and wind-tunnel work. Behind the wheel for this stage was Takuma Sato, former F1 and IndyCar driver, who came away calling the HRC-upgraded car racier and stiffer, with sharper responses. His verdict: “way better” than the standard car.
An HRC development engineer described the goal of the package as combining “sharp response with ease of control.”
The prototypes filmed at the circuit have shed some of the camouflage worn by the original concept at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. The redesigned panels themselves remain wrapped up, with the full reveal expected in the coming months.
Aero, Akrapovic, And An Adjustable Wing
The front bumper features a more pronounced splitter and optimized intakes feeding air into an HRC-branded intercooler. The profile gets flared fenders with integrated vents and more sculpted side skirts. At the rear, HRC added an adjustable wing and an aerodynamic bumper extension. Finally, the diffuser houses the triple tailpipes of the Akrapovic exhaust.

It remains to be seen whether HRC will offer chassis and performance upgrades beyond the confirmed changes to the cooling and exhaust systems. The turbocharged 2.0-liter VTEC engine currently produces 326 hp (243 kW / 330 PS) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque in Japanese-specification, surpassing the 315 hp (235 kW / 319 PS) of the US-spec equivalent. Even modest gains would put the Type R in interesting territory.

Honda could use the new parts to chase a fresh front-wheel-drive record at Suzuka and other famous tracks. The rival VW Golf GTI Edition 50 recently lapped the Nurburgring in 7:44.523, narrowly beating the 7:44.881 set by the Civic Type R back in 2023.

One smaller detail caught the eye of Japanese outlet Creative Trend. The 9-inch touchscreen in the HRC car runs the new Google Built-in infotainment system, the same setup already in the facelifted Civic and the latest Prelude. That suggests the Type R might soon benefit from subtle model year updates, likely coinciding with the release of the HRC package.
