• Paul Newman won Daytona’s GTS-1 class in this Roush Mustang Cobra.
  • The original body panels still carry dirt from the 1995 endurance race.
  • A Roush-built 6.0-liter V8 sends roughly 750 hp to the rear wheels.

Race cars with proper Hollywood history rarely cross the block, but this one does both. Roush is parting with more than a dozen cars from its US collection, and this 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra race car sits near the top of the pile. Driven by the late Paul Newman in IMSA’s GTS-1 class, it could anchor a museum display or, for the right wallet, see proper use again on a track day.

How did Paul Newman end up racing this Ford? Well, it was built to run at the 1995 Rolex Daytona 24 Hours, and just a month prior, Newman’s film Nobody’s Fool had just hit theaters. Apparently, Paramount Studios still had some money left in their marketing budget for the film, so they sponsored this car and added graphics to promote the film.

Newman himself frequently dabbled in various motorsport series when he wasn’t acting, including competing at the 1974 24 Hours of Le Mans, ultimately finishing second with a Porsche 935. For the 1995 Rolex 24 Hours, he partnered with Tommy Kendall, Mark Martin, and Michael Brockman with this Mustang Cobra, ultimately taking out victory in the GTS-1 class, despite Newman being 70 years old at the time.

After the race, the car was displayed at what would later become the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Daytona Beach, Florida, and fitted with spare body panels. Remarkably, the original panels used during the grueling 24-hour marathon were carefully preserved and have since been refitted to the car, complete with dirt, scuffs, and scratches from 31 years ago.

Powering the Ford is a 6.0-liter naturally aspirated Roush-built V8 mated to a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The car delivered around 750 hp at the time, which is still a monumental figure to this day. Without any safety aids, it must be both exhilarating and terrifying to drive for even five minutes, let alone 24 hours.
