Modded 40-Year Old Dacia Challenges BMW i8 For A Quarter Mile Run

Little did the old Dacia engineers think that some of their creations would go up against more powerful machines almost four decades later, but the amazing has been happening for quite a few years now.

Yet, apparently, some thought it would be worth tuning the ancient Romanian car and go drag racing. One of these was this year’s Campia Turzii quarter mile run that saw such a Dacia pinned against a more powerful and expensive BMW i8.

The owner if this relic has fitted a 2.0-liter turbo engine under the hood, which feeds approximately 340 horsepower to the all-wheel drive system. Yes, AWD, instead of the standard FWD, and 340 HP coming from a 2-liter turbo’d lump that replaces the old 1.3-liter naturally aspirated unit that produced just a little over 50 ponies back when the car was still new. That evens out the odds a little, doesn’t it?

40 years ago this car was Renault 12 not Dacia

    • Zed68

It’s not a Renault badge… it’s not a turkish version either… it’s a Dacia. Dacias of this model were produced between 1969 and 2004, there was a grille change in 79. This is a pre-79 model.
      So yes, it’s a 40 years old Dacia 1300.

is a large family car introduced by French automaker Renault at the Paris Motor Show in October 1969[3] and produced in France till 1980. Available as a saloon (Berline) and estate (Break), it was also produced under licence in many countries around the globe into the early 21st century.
In its first few years the 12 received praise from the European press for its spacious, comfortable interior, its styling, its performance and its low fuel consumption. However it fared worse in the North American press: in a test of the 1974 model, Road & Track was critical of the engine’s “obtrusive” noise, and called the heavy, non-power steering “a serious design flaw”. They also gave it “very poor marks” for the ventilation system.
Renault 12 production and sales ended in western Europe in 1980, but the model continued to be produced and sold by Renault affiliates elsewhere. The last R12 was produced in 2000 in Turkey, whereas Romanian automaker Dacia continued producing the R12-based 1310 sedan and estate until 2004 and the R12-based Dacia Pick-Up until December 2006.
Commercially the Renault 12 was a successful car, selling 2.5 million units.[4]

What wrong with You guys – couldn’t You understand that this car had been produced as a rebadged Renault with their license???
Same thin F.I.A.T. is doing mostly now – see the Voyager, Freemont, Fullback…

        • Zed68

Whats is wrong with YOU guys ?? We all know the Dacia 1300 is a rebadged Renault, still makes it a Dacia, not a Renault.
Do you call the Lada 2101 a Fiat 124 ? Do you call the Seat from the 80’s Fiats ??
I don’t even understand why you try to argue… yes the Dacia is a rebadged R12… but it IS a Dacia, not a R12 !
