BMW’s Big And Brawny X7 SUV Gets Schooled On The ‘Ring

BMW has a wide range of SUVs and crossovers in its lineup, but coming to top them all is the all-new X7.

Positioned above the new X5 and sharing the CLAR platform with the 5-Series and 7-Series models, the development of the Bavarian firm’s upcoming flagship SUV continues on the Nurburgring.

The latest video show a fully camouflaged prototype being put to the test on the track. Despite its generous dimensions, which will allow for the use of three rows of seats, it seems quite agile.

Challenging the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover, the new BMW X7 will be powered by a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines. Joining the family later on will be a PHEV too, and coming to sit at the top of the range could be an M Performance model with a turbocharged V8

On the outside, it will be similar to the X5, albeit on a larger scale, with a flat-face front end and a boxy cabin. Inside, we expect it to remind more of the 7-Series than the X5, including the on-board tech and luxury features.

Before the German automaker pulls the covers off the new X7 next year, we could get an early look at the SUV through a near-production concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

It’s about time BMW offered a third row option for their SUV lineup.

The X5 has an optional 3rd row.

I’m talking about with actual room. Saying that the X5 has a usable third row is the same as saying the 2 Series has a usable back seat.

        • TotallyDisqusted

I’ve found it to be more usable than other vehicles in its class.

Well that’s a toss up because both the Range Rover Sport (which also doesn’t have a real 3 row) is considered in it’s class along with the Porsche Cayenne (which doesn’t have a 3rd row) along with the Lexus RX (which doesn’t have a third row). The Mercedes GLE, which also doesn’t have a third row is also considered in it’s class. But the funny thing is that the Audi Q7 is as well and it’s much larger than the Q5.

BMW has been trying to make the X5 do it all, which makes no sense. They should have made the Q7 years ago. It would be a better rival to the QX80, Q7 and Land Rover LR4. As well as the Mercedes GLS and Lexus LX. It just makes sense and I for one would love to welcome the vehicle with open arms. BMW has been getting my attention lately. The new 5 and 7 Series are some lookers with some amazing technology.

  • It’s a family hauler, isn’t testing it on the ring a little overboard?
