New Ford Focus To Feature Pothole Detection Tech For A Smoother Ride

If you live in a place that’s plagued by potholes, such as the UK, then you’ll surely appreciate Ford’s attempt to minimize the damage these holes in the road can cause.

This year’s “Beast from the East’ arctic air-mass was responsible for the icy conditions that led to road surfaces becoming even more damaged. In fact, according to Asphaltuk, a pothole needed to be repaired every 21 seconds in England and Wales this past year.

As you well know, potholes (especially severe ones), can damage not just your car’s rims, but also your tires and even your suspension system, which many times means money out of your pocket. This is where Ford’s pothole detection technology comes in, sensing when a wheel is about to fall into a pothole and adjusting the suspension to limit just how far it will drop.

What happens next is that because the wheel doesn’t fall as far anymore, it also doesn’t strike the opposite side of the pothole as harshly on exit. Meanwhile, the rear suspension can now respond even faster than the front, thanks to the split-second warning it receives via the front sensors.

“Our engineers are always searching for the roughest roads to really test our suspension to the limit, but more and more we’re noticing that the rough roads are finding us,” stated Guy Mathot, Ford Focus vehicle dynamics supervisor. “Potholes are a problem that isn’t going away anytime soon, but with our advanced suspension technology for all-new Focus, we’ve been able to reduce their impact.”

The pothole detection tech of the all-new Focus, which is scheduled to arrive in UK dealerships this summer, is part of the car’s Continuously Controlled Damping system, which adjusts the suspension responses in real time as braking, steering, body and suspension inputs are constantly monitored (every two milliseconds).

Hoping the Focus Active has this tech.

  • G82FS

If it is the same system that the fusion sport has then it will be a disappointment…

  • Tom

… hmm, sorry, but the new Focus is not mine. Especially the side of Traveller or 4-door …. iiiiii 🙁

  • Nihar

Just recently, Domino’s aired a commercial about potholes. I was kind of surprised they used a new Fusion for the competitor. Doesn’t the Fusion have Pothole Mitigation?

    • G82FS

Only the sport has CCD with pothole mitigation and the benefits from it were negligible as far as I could tell.

  • Loquacious Borborygmus

Isn’t it galling that we need manufacturers to install equipment to deal with government issues?

  • Auf Wiedersehen

Why bother putting more tech in a model that is resigned to die VERY soon? Stupid. Put it on something that has a future.

    • ProtectOurHeritage

Ford may be killing off the Focus in the US, but here in Europe the next generation one will be along very soon. They are still managing to sell more than 200k+ here every year!

  • SteersUright

About time this tech made its way to mass transit cars. Just hope it doesnt add too much weight.

  • Puddingpopper

Are the potholes bad in europe?

  • ProtectOurHeritage

Just something else to go wrong, and when it comes to Fords, it will be quite often!

  • Shtekeris

It will just overheat and explode in my country with pothole road, sometimes covered with occasional smooth tarmac.
