Can A 1,150HP Challenger Hellcat Beat The McLaren 720S? Hell No!

As much as we would have enjoyed seeing the Demon beaten into submission by the McLaren 720S again, the following video is all about its lesser sibling: the Hellcat.

Well, ‘lesser’ is not the word to go for here, because this Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat actually has more power than the original Bugatti Veyron.

If the numbers disclosed in the description of the video are correct, then the muscle car has an immense 1,150 horsepower to play with. So, on a good day, it could probably hit 62mph (100km/h) in less than 3 seconds, and it’s likely a 10-second car, too.

Then again, as fierce as its challenger (pun intended) may be, the McLaren 720S can always pull a little surprise. The clever engineering that went into its development has definitely paid off, as the British supercar goes like a bat out of hell.

Unlike the tuned supercharged 6.2-liter V8 of the American model, the 720S has a smaller 4.0-liter V8 with twin-turbocharging. Thus, 710 horses and 568 pound-feet (770Nm) of torque are being channeled to the rear wheels through a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission.

It doesn’t even need a good day to reach 62mph (100km/h) in 2.9 seconds, or a top speed of 341km/h (212mph), because it lays down the power without breaking a sweat.

But surely, as bad as it may be, it cannot possibly hold its ground against a vehicle that’s almost 450hp more powerful. As things turned out, it definitely could. Surprised?

Im not buying these results… no way.

    • designer_dick

What’s not to buy? It lost out to a car with more sophisticated engineering and superior grip that weighs almost 600kg less.

      • Dale Moffett

Yes but they are in two very separate classes. Super car vs muscle. Big difference

        • venomoussvt

I just think its hilarious the article says “hell no”. I was expecting the hellcat to get smoked, instead the mclaren pulled on him a little and stayed there.. I could expect that from a car that costs 5 times more money.

Nothing can beat the Raccoon, its the fastest car ever made!!! Nothing will ever beat the Orange Raccoon!

Now, let’s go an’ look again at the Tesla S Ludicrous/ Then let’s look at the Tesla 3. Not mentioning the Tesla X, might stir up the gut and loins of the young blokes who can only smell gasoline.

    • Oliver Moore

We’re all tired of pretentious EV worshippers, with that out of the way, the 720S pulls ahead before the race ends, the Roadster will probably be a different story.

      • benT

Are you wider than you are tall?

        • Oliver Moore

We were talking about EVs, keep it that way.

  • Dale Moffett

I really don’t see the point of doing these races the Challenger is a pony car it’s heavy and good for going straight and some corners. That’s what it’s made for. The maclaren is a super car engineered for fast speed and corners it’s not a fair comparison. Even then the hellcat stayed with it so say what you want but I call unfair still

    • Craig

The Challenger is a ‘Muscle Car’ not a ‘Pony Car’. That said.. if we only compared what’s fair – races would soon be a thing of the past.

      • Dale Moffett

No if you look it up the Challenger is called a pony car it is mainly called a muscle car because that’s what people view it as the Challenger actually falls in the pony category not the muscle as others make it seem

        • Craig

          I don’t agree. AT ALL.

          • Dale Moffett

You may not agree but every man is entitled to their own opinion so I’ll just leave it at that

        • Oliver Moore

So what is a muscle car any more? Do they not exist?

Hard to look at the Challenger Hellcat without the wide bodywork.

  • john1168

I’m surprised that Demon did as well as it did. I hate roll races but that was a good run. Even though the 720 is down 200hp it’s hard to argue against superior aerodynamics and 1300 pounds less weight.

  • Jon Providence

The McLaren is lighter in weight lower center of gravity and much more aerodynamic than that fat old Dodge which has the aerodynamics of a refrigerator.

The Dodge wouldve probably won if they had more room though
