Hennessey’s 1,000 HP Corvette ZR1 Goes Head To Head With The Ferrari 488 GTB

With the spotlight currently on the all-new Corvette C8 Stingray, it’s easy to forget that there are some truly marvelous examples of the previous-gen out there. One of them is the ZR1 tuned by Hennessey, which boasts a massive output.

Equipped with the tuner’s HPE1000 kit, the 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 has a whopping 1,000 horsepower and 966 pound-feet (1,310 Nm) of torque. The extra 245 hp and 251 lb-ft (340 Nm) have dropped the naught to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) time to just 2.3 seconds. Top speed is 230+ mph (370+ km/h), and the car can run the quarter-mile in 9.4 second at 147 mph (237 km/h).

Those are some very serious numbers, obtained by upgrading several components in the engine bay and retuning the ECU. To put them into perspective, after strapping their tuned ZR1 to the dyno earlier this month, Hennessey conducted a good old drag race against one serious machine: the Ferrari 488 GTB.

Unlike the ZR1, the Italian supercar is bone stock, but it’s not like it needs any mods to put to shame some well-established contenders as its 3.9-liter, twin-turbo V8 pumps out 661 HP and 561 lb-ft (760 Nm) of torque. It can hit the 60 mph (96 km/h) mark in just a little under 3 seconds, and flat-out, it will do 205 mph (330 km/h). This would be enough to teach a lesson or two to the stock Corvette ZR1, but does it actually stand a chance against Hennessey’s monstrous ‘Vette?

  • Seats & a steering wheel

Needed to do a stand start race…and also add a McLaren 720S which is THE performance benchmark.

  • GobbleUp

488 was never competitive the day it came to market. The Mac720 has owned it, from so cal to az and back.

    • Mr Mister

Southern California to Arizona isn’t terribly far.

      • Matt

Maybe he meant California to Azerbaijan

    • Mat

If not for rolling start 488 would win this. 720 is top of the range…You should compare it with Pista

  • Mat

Very clever to make rolling start… The only possible way Corvette with ridiculous 1000hp can win this.

    • c gaivoto

Do true! Why not race a 1000hp GTR?

  • Mr Mister

I think a stock ZR1 would be competitive with the 488. Also, that paint scheme really makes the ZR1 look ugly and highlights flaws in the styling that Chevy went for. They really should’ve integrated the A-pillar in and painted it, or painted the leading edge of the roof section and blacked out that middle section.

  • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

This thing is a monster, I’d love to drive it that’s for sure.

  • This guy

So to prove a point they raced a 1000hp car against one that has 650hp…………… why don’t they race it against a retiree in a mobility scooter?? or maybe against a top fuel funny car?

And in order to prove this imaginary point, they had to do a rolling start cause otherwise the Vette would just smoke the tires off of it and still be trying desperately to get out of 2nd or 3rd gear while the Ferrari crossed the line.

I will never understand these things done on a straight! It’s a very American thing. Sort of “saloon duel”. Cars need to be tested in mixed conditions to see which one is best. Straights only tell you which one is faster….on a straight.
