A new trademark filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office for the name “E 73” suggests that Mercedes is contemplating the creation of a potent addition to the E Class lineup.

The name was first noticed by CarBuzz and seems to follow AMG’s naming conventions. While the details in the trademark are limited, it sounds like the company could use it for a vehicle more powerful than the AMG E53 or E63.

Mercedes filed trademarks for G73, GLS73, and S73 in 2019 and, of course, there’s the GT73e. Reports have indicated that the plug-in hybrid Panamera-fighter could make more than 800 hp in order to return a sub-three-second 0-60 time.

The 73 moniker has been used in the past to refer to 7.3 liter V12s, though that is highly unlikely to be the case here. If this trademark is a name that will be used for an AMG model, it will be certain to have some degree of hybridization.

AMG recently said that all of its future models would feature some kind of hybrid technology. Whether this will share a drivetrain with the GT73e is hard to say t this point. The E63 and the GT63 4-Door Coupe both share a 4.0-liter twin-turbo, though the GT63 makes a bit more power.

It would make sense, though, for Mercedes to extend the use of its engine beyond one vehicle. We’ll likely have to wait some time before we know for sure, unfortunately. But for now, fans of E-Class have something to look forward to.
