The new Toyota Mirai is being launched in Europe and the Japanese carmaker has released all the details, together with a new image gallery, of the EU-spec version of the latest fuel-cell electric vehicle.

The new Toyota Mirai marks a drastic departure from the original, switching to the rear-drive GA-L modular platform and making it longer, wider, and lower than its, shall we say, visually-challenged predecessor.

The total power output of the Mirai’s fuel cell powertrain has increased to 179 HP (184 PS), while the new lithium-ion battery pack is not only more energy-dense than the previous model’s nickel-metal hydride unit but it’s also physically smaller and lighter. 0-62 mph (100 km/h) comes in 9 seconds, 0.6 seconds faster than before, with top speed set at 108 mph (175 km/h).

Toyota arranged three high-pressure hydrogen tanks in a ‘T’ configuration, increasing both the fuel capacity and the vehicle’s driving range by 30 percent. The tanks can hold 5.6 kg of hydrogen, with their position contributing to the Mirai’s lower center of gravity and 50:50 weight balance.

The greater capacity of the tanks allows the new Toyota Mirai to offer a driving range of around 404 miles (650 km), while the refueling process takes just five minutes or less.

With the proportions of a sporty rear-drive five-seat sedan, the new Toyota Mirai is now not only more a much more pleasant thing to look at but it’s also more spacious too.

European customers will be offered the choice between three trim levels: Mid, High, and High+. The entry-level Mid grade is fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, bi-LED headlights with Automatic High Beam, dual-zone air conditioning with remote control, heated front seats, smart entry, and push-button start, and an eight-inch multi-information display, among others.

The High trim level comes with synthetic leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, a Panoramic View Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert with auto brake, rear privacy glass, Intelligent Clearance Sonar, heated steering wheel, and ambient cabin lighting with eight color choices.

The range-topping High+ grade adds 20-inch black alloy wheels, a fixed panoramic glass roof, heads-up display, a digital rear-view mirror, semi-aniline leather upholstery,  triple-zone air-conditioning, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a rear-seat passenger control panel, the Advanced Park system and more.

Toyota has established a new Fuel Cell Business Group to oversee the company’s hydrogen activities in Europe and take advantage of the fast-expanding interest and investment in fuel cell technology. Toyota’s Fuel Cell Business Group, based in Brussels, Belgium, has also the goal to making the technology accessible to mobility and other industries and attract new commercial partners.
