While the new BMW M3 Competition’s design isn’t to everyone’s taste, it is a heck of a performer and that shows in this video from CarWow.

While the ever-popular YouTube channel could have decided to line-up the M3 Competition against some of its rivals, such as the Audi RS5 and Mercedes-AMG C63 S, it instead put it to the test against a modified Ford Mustang and an upgraded Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R.

The M3 Competition is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 503 hp and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque which is sent through the rear wheels courtesy of an eight-speed automatic transmission. Those are some serious figures but, even so, it is at a big disadvantage compared to the Mustang and the Skyline.

The Mustang’s 5.0-liter V8 has been adorned with a supercharger and now pumps out 735 hp and 509 lb-ft (690 Nm) of torque. It is also rear-wheel drive and has a six-speed automatic gearbox. By comparison, the Skyline has a much smaller 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder but is the most powerful of the trio with 750 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). It is also all-wheel drive and the only car from this bunch to feature a six-speed manual transmission.

During the drag races from a standing start, the M3 Competition leaves its rivals for dead thanks to its launch control system. Meanwhile, the Mustang struggles to put its power to the ground and during some of the races, the Skyline encountered some engine issues. However, during the final race, the Skyline keeps pace with the M3 and finishes just a couple of feet behind.
