The BMW Concept XM is a big deal for the German automaker as just the second standalone M vehicle introduced since the M1 supercar of the later ’70s. It will soon spawn a production model and in this video, the company talks about its striking design.

The video features interviews with BMW M chief executive Frank van Meel and head of BMW Design Domagoj Dukec. They are clearly very proud of their creation.

Dukec describes the XM as having a very “raw, massive, monolithic appearance,” while van Meel notes that like the original M1, the Concept XM has two BMW logos, albeit not placed on the rear bodywork like the M1 but rather on the rear window. Speaking of the rear, the layout of the four tailpipes is also particularly eye-catching.

The interior of the Concept XM is also very unique with Dukec comparing it to the inside of a cathedral. For example, there is a particularly striking headliner that looks like a piece of sculpture and distinctive brown leather paired with turquoise velvet upholstery.

Powering the BMW Concept XM is a twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine that’s coupled to an electric motor and pumps out a combined 750 hp and 737 lb-ft (999 Nm) of torque. BMW says the vehicle can travel approximately 50 miles (80 km) on electric power as per WLTP testing, or 30 miles (48 km) by U.S. measurements.

BMW has not divulged how much the production XM will cost but did say that series production will start in late 2022.
