Volvo has added a more affordable single-motor model to its C40 Recharge line as part of a raft of updates to its entire lineup that includes a facelift for EV versions of the XC40 SUV.

The new entry-level C40 ditches the rear motor fitted to more expensive models and instead relies on a single motor driving the front wheels. Volvo hasn’t released any performance figures for the new car but does say its 69 kWh battery pack will carry the C40 Recharge up to 269 miles (434 km) before needing a top-up according to WLTP testing. A 10-80 percent battery fill takes 32 minutes via a fast charger.

The fastback crossover’s SUV cousin, the XC40, is based around the same platform and already offers a single-motor option. So news regarding the compact SUV is centered around a styling update for the all-electric Recharge versions.

We caught a sneaky look at the subtle updates a few weeks ago when Volvo quietly revealed the update on European retail sites, but now the Chinese-owned Swedish carmaker has confirmed that the XC40 Recharge receives a frameless grille, revised LED Thor’s Hammer lights with adaptive technology, and a new bumper to bring the styling closer to the newer C40’s. Volvo has also added a premium leather-free upholstery option in the XC40 Recharge, plus new paint colors and alloy wheel designs.

Prices for the new single-motor C40, and its availability in the U.S., are TBC, but first UK deliveries are expected in fall 2022, by which time the XC40 Recharge facelift and other model updates should be rolled out around the globe. Those updates include changes to the equipment levels and option availability for all Volvo cars, which the company says will simplify the order process and increase price transparency.
