• Genesis reveals more photos of the G90 Wingback concept.
  • Study is based on the production-spec Genesis G90 sedan.
  • Features a sporty Magma bodykit and unique rear-end styling.

Genesis can’t stop teasing us with concepts that seem to inch closer to production every time. The G90 Wingback is one of the more intriguing examples, hinting that the Korean automaker might be seriously considering a performance wagon built off its luxury flagship sedan, even if it’s a limited run.

The G90 Wingback was first unveiled on the sidelines of a recent event in France. While the spotlight was meant for the GV60 Magma production crossover and the mid-engined Magma GT sports car concept, it was the muscular long-roof G90 that quietly stole the show.

Now, Genesis has released a fresh batch of photos that better show off the G90 Wingback. According to the company, this wagon is one more example of “the diverse forms Magma can take”, a continuation of ideas that started with the earlier G90 X Gran Coupe and Convertible concepts.

What Exactly Is It?

Underneath, the Wingback sticks with the same “unmodified G90 platform,” retaining the 3,180 mm (125.2-inch) wheelbase and a body length close to the production sedan. But the similarities taper off from there. In place of the G90’s upright rear deck is a completely reworked tail section with a proper hatchback and a fresh bodykit.

Styling upgrades include a sharper front bumper, a bolder grille, and reworked intakes accented by canards. The fenders are visibly wider front and rear, and a pair of angular fins run along the roofline in place of traditional rails.

But the rear is where it gets particularly interesting, blending a dual-element spoiler with a wide diffuser and four tailpipes tucked neatly within. The concept also wears a muted deep green finish and sits on dark-finished 22-inch alloys wrapped in low-profile rubber.

A Sporty Yet Luxurious Interior

We also get a glimpse inside the cabin, which swaps traditional leather for a suede-like material called Chamude. The cabin showcases a clean design with a beautiful steering wheel and heavily bolstered seats, finished in contrasting green piping, quilting, and stitching.

Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis Chief Creative Officer, sees designs like the Wingback as a response to the current flood of SUVs on the market.

“The multiplication of SUVs” will, he suggests, lead to “saturation.” That’s when, in his view, other body styles will come back into favor, hence the brand’s experimentation with G90-based concepts.

Is There a Real Business Case?

Donckerwolke calls the Wingback a “bridge between Magma and the One of One bespoke program,” which hints at the possibility of a limited-run production model. He’s also said before that G90-based offshoots are “very executable” and wouldn’t need significant investment to build.

Adding weight to that, Manfred Harrer, who heads Genesis and its Performance Development Tech Unit, confirmed the company is already developing a revised G90 chassis for an upcoming Magma model.

That platform could just as easily serve as the foundation for other variants, including the Wingback and the X Gran Coupe, both of which would benefit from enhanced driving dynamics baked in from the start.

What Could Power It?

Genesis G90 Performance Wagon Just Gave Us False Hope Again

On the engine front, the standard G90 uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, but a full Magma version would likely need something with more edge. An electrified setup seems a logical next step, offering a balance between power and efficiency. But there’s also chatter about a V8, potentially related to the one developed for the mid-engined Magma GT.

Genesis is already working on a V8 racing engine for its upcoming Le Mans hypercar, and scaling it down to Magma-branded roadcars would certainly make sense in terms of market positioning.

After all, the brand aims to rival the BMW M and Mercedes AMG divisions, both of which use ultra-powerful plug-in hybrid V8 setups for their performance flagships.
