• Gunther Werks built 25 Speedsters using classic 993 bones.
  • Power comes from a 4.0L air cooled flat six making 430 hp.
  • Gin Tree Green car was sold for $965,000 on Bring a Trailer.

The restomod Porsche 911 scene has no shortage of jaw-dropping builds, but few are as exclusive or as costly as what Gunther Werks turns out. Just take a look at this immaculate 911 Speedster, which recently traded hands for a hefty $965,000.

At first glance, that figure appears to represent a steep $185,000 drop from the previously reported $1.15 million sale price on PCar Market (you can still see that listing here). However, according to a Gunther Werks spokesperson who contacted us after publication, that isn’t the full story.

Gunther Werks built just 25 examples of its 911 Speedster, and this one left its workshop in October 2022. The spokesperson told us the vehicle was “purchased new for $675,000, driven 1,400 miles, then consigned by the customer to HK Motorcars (a GW dealer) to sell.”

The owner, viewing this ultra-rare Gunther Werks creation as a solid investment, listed it on Bring a Trailer. After a brief flurry of activity, bidding peaked at $905,000, falling short of the seller’s reserve. Not long after, the Speedster was confirmed sold via private offer for $965,000.

While that figure appeared to reflect a significant drop from the prior listing, Gunther Werks stated through its spokesperson that “HK Motorcars had a dealer credit for client/owner which included a trade-in value on top of the value of the car, which is reflected in the PCar Market sale price.”

This Rare Porsche Didn’t Sell At Auction, But That Didn’t Stop The Deal

In short, the $1.15 million figure on PCar Market apparently included more than just the vehicle itself, a structure not evident in the public listing and one that raises questions about full disclosure and how values are represented in some auctions.

According to the company, there was no financial loss for the original owner in the deal, despite the listing on PCar Market. Instead, Gunther Werks stated that the owner, who held the car for several years, “made nearly $300,000 on the sale.”

As with all Gunther Werks Speedsters, the build starts by stripping the donor car to its original steel chassis. From there, it receives a full suite of carbon fiber body panels, fitted with obsessive attention to detail.

This one wears a custom Gin Tree Green metallic finish, complemented by matte green side stripes and yellow Porsche branding.

Beneath the skin lies a 4.0-liter air-cooled flat-six, built with Mahle pistons, forged connecting rods, and a billet crankshaft. It puts out 430 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, channeled through a six-speed manual to the rear wheels.

Suspension is handled by adaptive coilovers, and braking is upgraded with six-piston Brembos up front and four-piston calipers in the rear. Inside, the cabin has been reworked with the same thoroughness as the exterior.

Update: This article has been revised to include a statement from Gunther Werks clarifying that the $1.15 million figure listed in the PCar Market auction result included a trade-in credit that was not disclosed in the listing. The company maintains that the seller did not incur a financial loss in the transaction.
