- Legacy Overland has overhauled the off-roader and turned it into a soft-top.
- Found beneath the skin is a new 355 cubic-inch GM V8 and a new clutch.
Of all the Toyota Land Cruisers, the FJ40 may be the most iconic. Built from 1960 and not killed off until 2001 in some markets, the FJ40 was perhaps the perfect rugged off-roader that had been distilled down, refined, and not impeded by complex powertrains or technologies. Given its legendary status, it’s no wonder several firms offer upgrade kits for it, making it a little more modern without compromising its purity.
One of these firms is Legacy Overland and this is its latest FJ40. It was stripped back to the original frame before a small block 355 cubic-inch GM V8 was fitted. The engine has been upgraded with Holly Sniper electronic fuel injection, an aluminum radiator, and a stainless-steel exhaust. The FJ40’s transmission has also been upgraded with a new clutch and a rebuilt transfer case.

Elsewhere, there are new front and rear driveshafts as well as a modernized braking system with a new master cylinder and booster. After upgrading many of the Toyota’s mechanical components, Legacy then turned its attention to the exterior and interior.
For starters, the original hardtop has been ditched in favor of a soft-top conversion, meaning the owner will be able to enjoy nature’s elements while climbing up a rocky canyon or cruising along Sunset Boulevard. The company also added new doors, handles, and seals, and bolted on a set of 15-inch Sumitomo wheels.
The interior has been given a new lease on life thanks to new door cards and shift boots. While it would’ve been easy to add in a modern infotainment system, or perhaps a thumping sound system, Legacy hasn’t done that, and that’s worthy of applause. Think of this FJ as an original with a healthy dose of extra power and some welcome amenities to make your life easier. Sounds perfect to us.
