While Mercedes is busy slapping the AMG logo onto virtually everything with wheels, BMW M is laughing all the way to the bank as they sold a record 135,829 vehicles last year.

While BMW M doesn’t specifically mention Mercedes-AMG by name, they noted the record sales mean they’re the “most successful manufacturer in its segment for the first time.”

In 2019, sales of BMW M models jumped 32.2 percent. The company credits some of this success to their “unparalleled model offensive” which saw them launch the X3 and X4 M as well as the M8 Coupe and Convertible.

The United States was the biggest market for BMW M and the company sold 44,442 units in America last year. Rounding out the top three markets were Germany (26,110 units) and the United Kingdom (17,688 units).

BMW M expects sales to increase in the future as 2020 will see the launch of a handful of new models. The M8 Gran Coupe will hit dealers shortly and be joined by the M2 CS as well as the X5 and X6 M. BMW also noted the world premiere of the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe are scheduled for 2020.

BMW didn’t say when those models would be introduced, but they are slated to use the same 3.0-liter M Twin Power Turbo six-cylinder engine as the X3 M and X4 M. As a result the standard models will have 473 hp (353 kW / 480 PS), while the Competition variants will be rated at 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS).

BMW M CEO Markus Flasch said the company is proud of becoming the top-selling brand in the performance / high-performance segment and credited their success to the authentic character of their products as well as a continuous growth strategy.
