Back in 1939, GM unveiled their Futurama exhibit at the New York World’s Fair.

Its purpose was to introduce Americans to highways, which were still a relatively novel idea at the time. However, less than two decades later, the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 was passed and highways transformed how we moved place to place.

Fast forward to today and GM is evoking the idea of Futurama as they’re trying to revolutionize transportation once again.  This time they want “zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.”

In order for that to happen, GM envisions that highways will be littered with “charging stations readily available to power all types of electric vehicles.” The company says these EVs will be connected and capable of talking to one another, which will help reduce congestion while also improving safety.

GM released a video showing their version of the future and it includes a Cruise Origin equipped with digital side windows that can show movies and entertainment programs. Despite sounding futuristic, GM first introduced their so-called “Windows of Opportunity” in 2012 and noted they had the potential to replace traditional rear seat entertainment systems.

The clip also showcases a steering wheel-less Chevrolet Bolt and suggests OnStar could be expanded to track your well-being thanks to vehicle sensors which monitor your heart rate. We can also see a drone or flying car as well as a number of concepts including the Buick Enspire, Buick Riviera and Chevrolet FNR.

More interestingly, the clip appears to tease an autonomous concept from Cadillac. As you can see, the model has a square steering wheel, a wraparound digital dashboard and a floating center console. There are also two individual rear seats which are separated by a console with curved display. We can also see two large displays mounted on the back of the front seats.

We’re not entirely sure what the Cadillac is, but the clip also shows the GMC Hummer EV and the Chevrolet Silverado ZH2 from GM Defense. It also hints at high-tech features such as 3D video calls and fully autonomous driving technology.
