Electric vehicles are increasing in popularity, but it’s still surprising to see them dominating the shortlist for 2022 European Car of the Year.

Out of the seven finalists, six are fully electric as the only outlier is the redesigned Peugeot 308.

It will have to battle a number of electric competitors including the Cupra Born, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Rounding out the contenders are the Renault Megane E-Tech and Skoda Enyaq iV.

Making things more interesting is the fact these seven vehicles were selected out of a field of 39 contenders, which included heavyweights such as the BMW 2-Series Coupe, Maserati MC20, McLaren Artura, and Mercedes C-Class. The aforementioned models also beat out electric competitors including the Audi e-tron GT and Q4 e-tron, BMW iX and i4, and the Mercedes EQS. Also left behind were the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4.

This year’s winner will be announced on February 28th, following a final round of voting. It remains unclear which model will win, but the Kia EV6 is undoubtedly impressive as it’s GT variant features a dual-motor all-wheel drive system that produces 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 546 lb-ft (740 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds.
