Subaru’s design team seemed to have taken it easy with the 2025 Forester, but they weren’t alone in their relaxed approach, as the engineering team decided to take an early break, letting Toyota handle some of the heavy lifting.

Speaking to Autonews, Subaru of America’s Jeff Walters said the upcoming hybrid variant will have a “Toyota-sourced battery [and electric components] joined with a boxer engine.” He added the hybrid will arrive roughly one year after the standard model and details will be announced in due course.

We’ll learn more in the coming months, but the 2025 Forester will be launched next spring with a 2.5-liter engine developing a mere 180 hp (134 kW / 183 PS) and 178 lb-ft (241 Nm) of torque. It will be paired to a continuously variable transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system, ensuring your life as an office drone never gets to spicy.

This isn’t the first time Toyota and Subaru have teamed up. Quite the opposite as the two famously partnered on the BRZ and GT86. They’ve also worked together on the Crosstrek plug-in hybrid and bZ4X / Solterra.

Speaking of joint electric vehicles, the publication quoted Walters as saying their next three EVs will be “alliance vehicles.” The Chief Operating Officer went on to claim their upcoming portfolio is the “most full and robust” in company history.

Walters didn’t go into specifics, but suggested we can expect a lot of new vehicles between now and 2028. Of course, if they’re badge-engineered Toyotas, that’s hardly exciting.
