Only 24 hours after becoming available for pre-booking in Europe, the Volkswagen ID.3 racked up more than 10,000 registrations.

This is quite a remarkable feat for VW’s all-electric vehicle considering that only 30,000 units of the ID.3 1ST launch edition version will be available for those who want to secure an early build slot via a refundable deposit of €1,000 ($1,125).

VW says that interest in the new model is so high that the company’s IT systems are sometimes “unable to handle the large number of users accessing the system at the same time.” In some markets, this leads to long waiting times and interruptions in the registration process. VW says it is working hard to eliminate the hitches.

The specially configured VW ID.3 1ST launch edition available for pre-booking has a driving range of up to 420 km (261 miles) WLTP and is offered at under €40,000 ($45,000). However, the base model with a range of 330 km (205 miles) will be on sale for under €30,000 ($33,750) in Germany.

The ID.3 1ST packs the medium-sized battery option and comes in four colors and three trim levels: ID.3 1ST, ID.3 1ST Plus, and ID.3 1ST Max. The base version comes with larger wheels, voice control, and navigation system, the middle version adds IQ. Light and bi-color exterior and interior design, while the range-topper adds a large panoramic glass roof and an augmented reality head-up display.

Besides a well-equipped car, pre-bookers also get free recharging for the first year up to a maximum of 2,000 kWh. Production of the Volkswagen ID.3 1ST will start at the end of 2019 and the first vehicles will reach customers in mid-2020.

VW says it has already built 200 pre-production ID.3s at the Zwickau plant in Germany as the transformation of the site into a pure e-car factory has already begun. Zwickau is scheduled to become “the largest production site for electric mobility in Europe,” according to VW. The plant will have a capacity of 330,000 electric vehicles a year when fully operational.
