Lamborghini CEO Announces The Urus Will Go Racing – But Where?

Long before its launch, Lamborghini talked about the Urus as a ‘super SUV’, announcing its plans to steal the Nurburgring lap record for high-riding vehicles.

Fast forward to present day, and the brand’s chief, Stefano Domenicali, says that the Urus will be at the starting line of a racing series that has yet to be disclosed, as reported by Autocar.

“Lamborghini welcomes challenges, but whatever we do, will be quite different from other brands. We will choose a form of competition intended only for our class of vehicle. Our car has many faces. You can enjoy its beauty, it is very fast on the track, very fast off-road and very fast on gravel. We will choose something that combines all of these things”, commented Domenicali.

Unlike sister brand Bentley, which will race the Bentayga at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Lamborghini will skip the event. Nevertheless, they will keep a close eye on the Bentley SUV’s performance, as it will provide them with a “benchmark”.

Another member of the Volkswagen Group family will be present at Pikes Peak, namely Volkswagen, with the ID R project, an electric racer with four-wheel drive that provides yet another glimpse into the company’s upcoming ID zero-emission sub-brand.

Lamborghini is expected to make the official announcement at the end of the year, but in the meantime, the Urus could hit the ‘Ring to chase after the lap record for SUVs.

The crown is currently held by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which completed the course in 7 minutes and 51.7 seconds last fall, about 8 seconds faster than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and 20+ seconds quicker than the Range Rover Sport SVR.

With 650PS (641hp) and 850Nm (627lb-ft) of torque produced by the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, the Urus certainly has the firepower to do beat the Alfa.

Nevertheless, since the Pikes Peak has been ruled out, can’t help but wonder which racing series Lambo’s crossover will compete in. Now, we’re clutching at straws here, but could it be the Dakar rally?

  • But Dakar Rally meant that the Urus would be wholly different than the road going counterpart, so it’s kinda pointless.

But again there isn’t many racing series for SUV is it?

It will not be a race per se. It will be more of a reality show, where specifically older, fat, ugly, but filthy rich men would use their new fancy lamborghini suvs to pickup fancy women. It will be a race on the tracks of highways, on the deserts of night supermarket parking lots and on the side off-roads in forests near cities. Spectacular new sport intended only for this class of vehicle.
