Tesla Sits Helplessly As Cameras Record Rear-End Collision

Maybe, one day, full Level 5 autonomous tech will enable cars to perform some kind of evasive maneuver to avoid getting rear-ended – but, until then, things like this will inevitably happen.

Still, this incident involving a Tesla and an old Toyota Corolla is a perfect example of how useful such a feature would be. Theoretically, if the car’s sensors can detect a fast approaching vehicle from behind and a scan of the surrounding area reveals that it is safe to move, avoiding such a crash should be possible.

Until then, though, these crashes will just keep happening, most of the times because drivers simply aren’t paying enough attention. In rare occassions, they might be experiencing health issues, but generally speaking, the main reason is distracted driving.

According to the description of the video, the driver of the Tesla wasn’t hurt, although they couldn’t speak on the condition of the Toyota driver.

“The signal light at the top of the highway onramp was active and alternating to stagger traffic during morning rush hour. The vehicle appeared to not be attentive to the signal or traffic as no attempt to stop or slow was made. I don’t know if there were any serious injuries resulting from the collision. You can see the vehicle ahead of mine was also hit by the offending vehicle after mine was hit. My vehicle was eventually rendered a total loss, but no life-threatening injuries were sustained by me. Two driver airbags were deployed upon the car impact with the signal pole.”

In the end, we can only hope that the driver and any potential occupants of that white Toyota made it out OK. It’s also a good thing that the Corolla didn’t cut across multiple lanes of that freeway after the impact, which might have resulted in a much worse scenario…

Last year, I was rear ended by a Rav 4. Since then, I’ve observed a pattern. Toyota drivers are the most inattentive people on the road. Not the most aggressive, but the most inattentive.

    • Alduin

Volvo,Prius,BMW and Tesla drivers are among the worst. A 2002 ish V60 flew past me on the freeway must’ve been going 110+ and of course no cops around to pull over the douchebag.

        Why are you here?

          Why are you?

    • marioGTI

Not all of them, plus Toyota’s are everywhere. You’re not going to see a lot of accidents involved Mitsubishi for example, does that mean that the Mitsu drivers are that good?

      • TheBelltower

Not all of them. But as a general rule, I avoid Corollas, Siennas and Rav 4s. They consistently do unexpected and confusing things.

        • ChrisInIL

If there are so many, how do you avoid them?

  • devo1977s

So Toyota must know they have bad drivers the Hazards came on right away. Lol

Please tell me the Corolla was OK atleast?

    • Knotmyrealname

You mean the driver or the car?
I’m pretty sure a phone was damaged in the collision though….

  • Jason Miller

I know exactly where that took place. On a side note, I don’t actually live in Phoenix but was stuck in traffic there this morning on my way to an appointment and there were so many Tesla’s around I lost count. At one point, three Model 3’s passed me all in a row. Thought that was pretty funny.

Except for owners of vintage sleds…on weekends!

  • salamOOn

traffic on the highway was not that bad to have lights on the ramp turned on….

  • Mike Gonzalez

who puts traffic lights on a highway!? Americans really need to step up their road game

    • TheBelltower

It’s an onramp. The light is supposed to help modulate merging traffic. In my experience, totally useless and often confusing for a lot of people.

    • Jason Miller

      Pretty normal actually.

  • TheNovanglus

If the Tesla driver had been attentive, he had to room avoid getting hammered and let the car in front of them take the hit. Use your rear-views people. That is what they’re for…keep your situational awareness.

    • Jason Miller

He’s paying attention to the light that tells him to go. Highly doubt his attention was or should have been behind him. Nice try though.

      • TheNovanglus

I’ve avoided several rear end accidents by keeping an eye on the rear-view, especially in situations like this. Constant scanning of your rear-view is an extremely important skill to acquire. It might even save your life.

  • TheNovanglus

Was the Tesla blocking the Corolla’s view of the stop-light? No. The driver of the Tesla has zero culpability. The Corolla driver should put down the phone and drive.

  • ChrisInIL

    You’re kidding right?

Watch the video. Then watch it again. If the video had been slowed down, other indicators would also have slowed down (traffic on the highway, warning lights blinking, etc.).

The Tesla was stopped at impact. How could it have been speeding?

  • JqC

The Corolla driver was just out to lunch. Their car drifts off post-impact, without even braking, into hwy traffic. There is something else going on here. However, I’m not sure how AP would have helped here as Tesla wasn’t in a position to easily get around the car in front. Nope, strike that. I know how AP would have helped…. If the Corolla was a Tesla.
